A collaboration between Vanguardia Dance Projects and Aanmitaagzi,

“Conversations” is a dialogue of bodies extended in various latitudes of the Americas. Starting from the investigation of “body and territory” by the Colombian-Canadian choreographer Olga Barrios, this work seeks a conversation between women through the Americas, seeking a South-North echo.

Barrios' research/creation explores the traces of indigenous heritage that have been erased in her journey, as has happened with many people in various places in America and the planet. This work is based on the woman of many colours that she experiences in herself and with the many other voices in the world that seek connection with ideas of traces erased from history.

The artists who joined conversations are Penny Couchie (North Bay), Nimikie Couchie (North Bay), Lilia León (Toronto-Mexico), Norma Araiza (Toronto- Mexico). Composer Edgardo Moreno (Hamilton- Chile), Visual artists Alejandra Higuera (Toronto- Colombia) and Sherry Guppy (Norht Bay), Ligthing dessigner Trevor Schwellnuss (Toronto), under the direction of choreographer and dancer Olga Barrios (Toronto-Colombia).

The focus of this project is to transform the concept of an individual research piece that starts from a solo work (Mestiza- Mixed raced woman in Spanish), and that begins in Colombia at the Museum Tayrona, to a group piece (Conversations) that travels through the column of the Americas, with members of the Vanguardia collective (Latin-Canadian collective) and the Aanmitaagzi organization (Indigenous organization), seeking an encounter with indigenous and mestizo peoples, especially women from different territories, where there are echoes of those realities mentioned above.

This interdisciplinary work that departs from dance, also contains questions related to form and content such as body gesture, storytelling, the protocols of the performative space, the image (camera dialogues, two-dimensional body on screen and three-dimensional body on stage), the soundscape in dialogue with territories of image, body and technology, and the voice of diverse women in society and in history.
